The national planning practice guidance website has gone live, creating planning advice that is easy to access and easy to understand.

Available on the web and designed to allow easy interpretation by the public, the website has taken a brave new step in trying to break through the complexity of the planning system.

Alongside the launch is a raft of new, progressive policies designed to impact on day-to-day issues such as car parks, housing for the elderly, and open spaces. The policies are eye catching and aimed at a specific audience. No longer is the planning system just about the professionals, civil servants and Councillors; it is now a public domain, and rightly so.

The policies set out are hardly ground breaking and whilst there is plenty still for the professional planner to get his teeth into (more from us on this later), the focus is about how planning touches real people and very much about common sense.

We are all for common sense and all for easy access. At its base the planning system is simple, designed to balance what we want and need with how it impacts people and our environments. Why complicate things? The website is a good start. We wish it all the best and look forward to interrogating it very soon!
