It's CHIPs for planning consultants Turley Associates

Press release: 12 May 2011

Planning and urban design consultancy Turley Associates has been appointed by the London Borough of Hillingdon to run a second pilot of the Community Heritage Initiative Project (CHIPs).

The project, which is jointly funded by English Heritage, will use Turley Associates' experience and skills in community engagement and heritage appraisal work to facilitate the production of conservation area appraisals by the local community for a number of conservation areas included on the Heritage at Risk Register.

Roger Mascall, Head of Heritage at Turley Associates, said: "In seeking to harness local knowledge and support, the project can deliver heritage assessment work within the localism context. Local authority resources are stretched, yet conservation area character appraisals are vital local heritage management tools - harnessing local enthusiasm and knowledge to produce appraisals is not only efficient but also encourages local stewardship."

Cabinet Member for Planning, Transportation and Recycling, Cllr Keith Burrows, said: "These conservation area character appraisals are an important aspect of our work, yet it is local communities that know and appreciate these areas best. This is an innovative scheme and we are delighted to be working with Turley Associates and English Heritage."

Hillingdon Council was delighted to be awarded the funding for this project, the first of its type in London. The project will run for up to two years and apart from delivering a number of appraisals for a range of conservation areas across the Borough, will also build the capacity of local communities with an interest in their historic areas.
