Research

Today’s planning and development agendas focus on creating sustainable, economically viable and socially acceptable schemes. The Government’s new White Paper, “Planning for a Sustainable Future” demands better information to assess the impacts of developments and in creating development plans.

Our Research and Market Intelligence (RMi) team provides this analytical input by combining expertise in planning, economics, property investment, research, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis. The team blends commercial and professional experience with economic and property market databases including MapInfo, Verdict and in-house GIS incorporating mapping and socio-demographic analysis.

 Recent RMi projects include:

  • providing evidence for retail and town centre LDF submissions in Chelmsford, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Milton Keynes
  • planning policy monitoring and supporting the expansion of one of the country’s largest retail branch networks
  • planning and economic assessments – capacity, impact & critiques in support of major town centre expansion projects including Newcastle, Bristol, Cardiff, Milton Keynes and Bracknell
  • prioritizing regeneration opportunities through identification of brownfield sites identifying optimal sites for new business location
We are launching a research programme to support our expansion in the Planning and Urban Design markets with the specific aim of establishing:
  • how developments will be affected by new policy objectives
  • where tomorrow’s investments will be focussed
  • what impacts developments will have on local economies
Our research will explore for example:

  • The influence of Regional Spatial Strategies on major town centre investments
  • The reality of regeneration impacts: how many jobs, the implications for other businesses and on a town’s image and “branding”
  • New ways of promoting effective developments, linking design with economic benefits
We are always exploring new areas for research and analysis, should you wish to suggest an area or topic for analysis, or alternatively discover more about research services, please contact us.
