Clay Cross Coal

Derbyshire

We were appointed to prepare and submit an application for planning permission for the extraction of coal and a second application for the subsequent amendment of the working area. This amendment was needed due to the retention of an electricity substation but also increased the extraction area from 6ha to 10ha.

Location: Former Biwater Works Site, Clay Cross, Derbyshire
Status: Planning permission granted for the extraction of coal by opencast methods and subsequent permission for the amendment of the working area
Size: 24ha
Scale: Major application but relatively minor in terms of coal extracted

The client had an existing permission for the redevelopment of the site and the coal extraction was a 'windfall' operation that has generated income to cover the remediation of the former foundry site.
