This site is widely recognised as one of the best residential sites in the Gateshead and Newcastle region, though its proposed redevelopment by a previous landowner was shelved at the onset of the recession and it has remained dormant since. The proposal is for the careful conversion of the site into 175 new homes (a mix of houses and flats) and the conversion of the listed Grange House.

Our design team worked closely with Miller Homes (north east) and Gateshead Council to ensure that the high design aspiration for the site held by the local planning authority, local residents and stakeholders was delivered on site despite changed market conditions.

With the assistance of the client’s technical teams, Turley Associates’ our team was able to establish key principles of local distinctiveness and develop the masterplan to ensure that these principles became embedded in our final masterplan design. Our inputs extended through to the development and illustration of how Miller house types might be adapted to provide a better fit with the local vernacular and better positioning within the masterplan layout.

Methods of community and stakeholder engagement in Gateshead were critical to the successful outcome of the scheme.
